Sportshall athletics heats were held at Harris School on Thursday last week as part of the Eastern Warwickshire School Sport Partnership Plus calendar.

Year 5/6 pupils competed in the first round of a county competition, with the hope of winning through to the Eastern Warwickshire final which is to be held on March 13 again at Harris School.

They will then hope to go on to the county championships on March 19 which will be held at Coventry Sports Centre.

The competitions were supported by young leaders from Rugby High School.

They were both well fought battles. Paddox Primary School dominated the morning competition with Bilton Juniors as runners-up.

The afternoon competition was a much closer affair with Henry Hinde winning ahead of Northlands Primary.

There were some great races on the track. Traditionally within Primary School Sportshall Athletics competition all track races are relay based, so it is all about teamwork.

It was clear that some schools had been practising their relay changeovers.

The field event results are also scored as team scores but this is where individual performances can help to secure first place for their team within each event.

Notable performances came in the girls’ competitions with a 5.70m standing triple jump from Lucy (Henry Hinde) and 15m soft javelin by Harriet (Paddox).

The boys provided similar notable performances with 6.34m standing triple jump from Wesley (Boughton Leigh) and boys from Bilton with Andrei jumping 58 speed bounces and 21m in soft javelin from Lewis.

Well done to all those who took part and good luck to the schools who are going through to the final.
