Bilton School pupil Elizabeth Massie, 12, rounded off a successful summer of tennis at the LTA Warwickshire County Closed Tournament. She successfully defended the U12 title she won last year.

Later that day she went on to win the U14 category. Elizabeth would like to thank the school for all the support they have given her over the past 12 months since starting there.

n The South Warwickshire Club doubles runs over the whole of the summer involving players many of Warwickshire’s tennis clubs.

Rugby LTC entered teams in most age groups and each team played against other clubs in box leagues, with the winning pairs going through to the finals at Warwick Boat Club last Sunday. Three of Rugby’s teams managed to reach the finals which were played in glorious sunshine at Warwick Boat club beside the river Avon.

In the under 17s girls’ division, Emily Robinson and Gemma Trodd won all their matches in the league and are now champions of South Warwickshire. They will now go through to play the finalists from Birmingham (classed as ‘North Warwickshire’) next month. Rugby’s under 14B team of Peter Strange and Daniel Heathcote won their league on points and went through to the final to play a team from Kenilworth who they had beaten in the earlier stages of the tournament.

In the finals though, Kenilworth had their revenge and took the title, with Peter and Daniel settling for runners up position. Finally Rugby was also represented in the under 12s girls event.

Minnie Sprayson and Lucy Eaton had earned a place in the final, but narrowly lost their final, 7-6, 6-4.

All six players received a trophy and have done extremely well to reach the finals, so well done to all.
