Great performances in Glasgow

Last weekend saw Rugby Swimming Club’s Synchro section travel north to Glasgow for the Scottish National Age Group Synchronised Swimming Championships. Under the guidance of Head Coach, Hannah Secher, Rugby are now firmly established within the top echelon of British Synchro and were able to field competitors across a number of events; solo, duet and team.

Day 1 of competition was largely dedicated to the Technical elements of Synchro, with the girls performing defined Figures in an attempt to impress the panel of judges. Competing against most of the UK’s largest Clubs, Rugby were encouraged by some strong, individual results. Within the under 12 age category, Nayana Walker (7th) and Amelia Quinn (11th) secured top twelve placings and at under 15 level, Emily Durkin finished 12th. With the introduction of the Solo routines to music Rugby’s results continued to impress: Nayana Walker and Cassie Reed finishing a highly credible 6th and 7th respectively in the youngest age group with Emily Durkin asserting her position within the top strand of swimmers with an improved 8th place in the under 15’s.

The second day of competition was focused on the free routines - a chance to choreograph flair and originality on top of the core demands of the sport. Rugby continued to produce excellent results within the under 12 level: Amelia Quinn and Cassie Reed finishing 5th in the Duet competition and Hannah Linden and Nayana Walker agonisingly close to a medal in 4th position. At under 15 age group, Rhia Perks joined Emily Durkin to finish 6th and Grace Huett and Holly Tonks secured a super 8th place.

Not to miss out, Zoe Hart and Gemma Broad finished 6th within the junior category with Ellie Frost and Emilia Walker claimed a respectable 10th.

As the final team events commenced, Rugby were desperate to return home with at least one medal. The under 17 team fought hard to produce a 5th place finish with Maja Nicholson, Alice Old and Meredith Whiting joining the swimmers from the two duet pairings. It fell on the under 12 team to round off some good performances with a podium-finish. Swimming a fast and energetic routine the team (Nayana Walker, Amelia Quinn, Cassie Reed, Abby Huett, Hannah Linden, Charlotte Twist, Isobel Ogg, Danielle Medgett and Elise Richardson) did not let Rugby down and claimed a superb silver medal - a performance which provides great hope for the upcoming UK National Championships.

Well done girls - some great results north of the border. Special thanks to team managers; Helen Walker and Jo Durkin - and to all the fabulous travelling support.
