Children enjoy six weeks of coaching and free racket
Rugby Lawn Tennis Club has just completed its second ‘Tennis for Kids’ course.
This was part of a national initiative founded by Britain’s Davis Cup captain Leon Smith OBE.
After leading the team to victory to win the Davis Cup for the first time in 79 years, Leon Smith wanted to continue the legacy by getting 1,000 coaches over the UK to deliver a six-week free coaching course to ten children aged between 5-8 years old who were new to tennis.
At the end they would receive a free tennis racket to keep and hopefully would continue to play tennis and maybe even become the next Davis Cup stars!
Rugby Lawn Tennis Club’s level 3 coach Rachael Baker was one of the coaches selected to run the course after sending in a video application. After receiving training by Leon Smith himself at a course in Loughborough she set up the course with places being filled within a day! Rachael said: “It has been an honour to be given the opportunity to deliver this course.
“The training we received was brilliant and Leon Smith was such a friendly down to earth guy who just wants the best for tennis in the UK. I had great fun all the way through this course and it was lovely to see how excited the kids were receiving their free rackets and a ball. They all improved lots over the course of the six weeks and many seemed interested in wanting to continue playing tennis which shows they loved the course too!”
Rachael is running a summer holiday course at Rugby Lawn Tennis Club for under 16 year olds of any ability to have a go at playing tennis. They will be every Tuesday for five weeks starting on Tuesday, July 26 10am-12pm.
The cost is £10 per session or if you can make all five weeks it’s £45. Contact Rachael Baker on 07789740698 or by e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org to book a place or for more information.
