Mini Red County Finals

The Rugby area champions were in action last weekend playing the County Final. Charlotte Eaton, William Garthwaite, Ben Hillyard and Matthew Irish first had to play David Lloyd Solihull. The team got off to a great start moving their opponents around the court and taking the lead from the outset.
Charlotte won her matches 10-8 and 10-8, William won his 10-0 and 10-2, Ben won his 10-4 and 10-2 and Matthew won 10-3 and 10-7. Charlotte and William had a 10-5 victory in their doubles and Ben and Matthew’s doubles also showed another worth win with a 10-5 victory. The team could do no more securing their place in the final with a 10-0 win.
They now faced Solihull Arden who put out a strong team, the atmosphere was tense from the start. Ben played his first singles with some outstanding rallies he kept close to his opponent narrowly losing 8-10.
Matthew also had a tough first match, it was fairly even until Matthew just managed to pull ahead winning 10-8. William lost the first couple of points in his singles game but he worked hard to try and catch up he narrowly lost 7-10.
Charlotte’s first match seem to go on for a long time as the rallies were so long as the two girls battled it out.
The score did not reflect the effort put in as Charlotte lost 4-10. The pressure was on as we were down 3-1 in games but it was all still to play for.
Ben’s sheer determination carried him through his next match, he was chasing balls all over the court he never gave up and eventually lost 5-10. Matthew was 7-2 down in his match despite working really hard, he stepped up a gear and after some fantastic points pulled the match back to 7-7. The score ended up at 9-9 with a sudden death point to decide the winner, Matthew won it with a great shot down the line winning 10-9.
Charlotte battled hard in her next match as she was did her best to win the points, she never gave up eventually losing 2-10. William lost the first few points in his match but he stayed strong and made a massive comeback. He was running every ball down that was played and found a great rhythm as he started to get the advantage, it was all down to the deciding point which William won the score another 10-9.
In the doubles William and Charlotte had a tough match as the opponents were firing balls at them they lost 10-1. Ben and Matthew’s doubles looked like it was going the same way when they really pulled together as a team and started winning back some points.
The rallies were outstanding as both boys played their hearts out, at 9-9 it could have gone either way but the boys set up some great points hitting a winner to finish and win the game 10-9.
The team finished second in the County of Warwickshire a massive achievement and a great reward for all their hard work.
