Rugby LTC Club Singles Championships
The finalists in the 2014 club championships were the same four players as last year.
In the Ladies Singles (The Pam Bond Trophy) it was a very closely fought match. The current holder Rachael Baker went off to a storming start taking the 1st set by 6 games to 2.
Rachael was playing a very secure game of tennis with very few mistakes. However, Rebecca was beginning to find the pace of the game and took an early 3-0 lead in the 2nd set. Rachael fought back very well to go 4-3 up, but suddenly her reliable serve tightened up. Rebecca seized this opportunity to take the 2nd set 6-4.
Rebecca went into a 9-5 lead in the 3rd set champions tie break, only to see Rachael pull it back to a nervy 9-8. At which stage Rebecca produced a great 1st serve ace to take this year’s title.
In the Men’s Singles (The Graeme Baker Cup) it was the turn of last year’s winner Liam Victoros and Marcus Powell to do battle once again. Wow, what a first game! The conditions were very difficult with strong winds, but both players started with some terrific tennis and Liam going 1-0 up by breaking Marcus’s serve.
Unfortunately, Liam really struggled with his own 1st and 2nd serves from here on enabling Marcus to take the 1st set 6-1 and going into a 5-1 lead in the 2nd set. At this stage Marcus held two match points on his serve which Liam defended very well.
This appeared to help Liam relax and all of a sudden his serve and game came back as he clawed it back to 5-4. However, with several members of his family watching, Marcus gave his next service game his full attention and went on to secure his third title with a 6-1 6-4 victory.
Thanks to all 28 players who took part in the championships and a big mention for Pam Bond and Graeme Baker for sponsoring this event for another year.
