Young players enjoy five-day tournament at Rugby LTC

Rugby Summer Challenge 2013

Last week Rugby Tennis Club hosted its annual summer tennis tournament – the ‘Summer Challenge’.

This year there were over 70 entries spread across seven age groups.

The weather was good all week and there was some great play to be witnessed - numerous passers-by on Webb Ellis Road, stopped to watch the action.

The youngest players were the 9 and unders, who play on a slightly smaller court with a lower net and low compression balls.

That way their game is just like the adult game but in proportion to their height.

The winner of the boys’ event was Dhillon Virdee-Oakley from Solihull and the girls’ winner was Adeola Greatorex from Wolverhampton, with both runners up coming from Leicester.

There were also great performances from Rugby’s Kareena Kaushal, Ella Stuchbury and William Moore.

The ten and under event was won by Coventry’s Daniel Parks only beating Rugby’s Matthew Irish by the narrowest of margins. The winning girl was Elys Pollon from Lutterworth.

The winning boy in the under 12s event, Joseph Nicholson, had travelled up from South London to take part in the tournament. The highest placed player from Rugby was James Irish who came 4th.

For those who were knocked out in the first round there was a consolation event and this was contended by two Rugby LTC players which resulted in a close win for Liam Green over Adam Hewitt.

The under 14s boys event was an all-Rugby affair with Daniel Heathcote taking the winner’s trophy after a high quality match against his doubles partner Peter Strange. The girl’s event was won in style by Evie Biggs from Coventry, defeating Sarah Glover from Lancashire 6-2, 6-4.

This year there weren’t enough female entries in the older age groups to run girls events, but the boys events were well attended.

The under 16 boys event was dominated by players from Beechwood TC Coventry, and was won by William Dismorr, who beat top seed Cameron Maguire.

Rugby’s Sam Barnes was placed third in both the under 16s and the under 18s boys events. In the 18s, Rugby’s Liam Victoros defeated top seeded Richard Evans from Loughborough.

The men’s event was held on Wednesday evening and players travelled from several counties, playing four rounds of singles over the evening. Three players in the draw were from Rugby LTC and all three reached the semifinals of the event.

In the first semi Gareth Davies and David Heathcote had a lengthy battle which was won by Gareth on the tie-break.

The other semi saw Oxfordshire’s Marc Gilkes defeat Liam Victoros in another high quality match.

The final between Gareth and Marc could not have been closer, but in the end Marc just edged it on a final set tie break.

It has been a great week of tennis with the courts full every day and 1,579 games played over the five days.

Many thanks to the ‘Tennis Leaders’ from the club who helped this week – Gemma Trodd, Amy and Sam Barnes and David, James and Daniel Heathcote.

Amongst other things they umpired the matches of the younger players which was much appreciated by both the parents and the referee.
