One of the things that is so great about Duplicate Bridge is that those considered to be the better players do not always feature in the winners lists. New and scratch partners often do well. The scores this week were not particularly high with the best percentages going to the Thursday players.

n Tuesday saw a close match with honours going to Mary Kerridge and Geoff Stafford 59.8% followed by Graham Clarke and Richard Holland, 59.2% and Cassie Malisova and Petr Malish 58%.

n On Wednesday Keith Lodge and Brian Richardson led the field with 58%. Val Jones and David Edwards came second with Judith Kleiner and David Hicks third.

n Thursday saw a close result with Roger Ward and Freddie Foster gaining 62% Liz Edwards and Stuart Warne 61% and Judith Kleiner and David Hicks 60%.

n Judith continued to have a very successful week, by winning on Friday with Debbie Welch and scoring 60%. Pat and Tony Wren were second followed by Margaret and Dick Holdsworth.

On Friday a record eight teams of four competed in our First Friday of the month teams. First were Clare & Marion Dixon with Nicky Bainbridge & Betty Pickard with a decisive +71IMPs; second were Pam Southern & Ken Fernie with Mary Kerridge & Jeff Stafford on an excellent +47IMPs; third were Brian Mawby & Peter Halliday with Malcolm Melrose & Maxwell Kynoch on +44IMPs.

Teams scoring adds up to zero, which would be equivalent to 50%. In fourth place were Val Richards & John Chard with Janet Stuchbury & Laura Von Tucher on -21IMPs.

n On Monday evening, a full capacity of ten and a half tables played an eight round Bowman (or Appendix) Mitchell.

The two sides were scored seperately and top of North/South were Maxwell Kynoch & Malcolm Melrose with 59.38%; second and third were extremely close: Debbie Welch & Margaret Bias on 56.51% and Judy Douglas & Diana Kinch with 56.25; fourth were Geoff & Carol Davies with 53.80%.

n East/West was a more closely fought side and 51.04% was enough to give Christine Greenaway & Jane Reed first place; again second and third were very close: Eve Norton & Janet O’Connor on 48.96% and Chris Cooper & Helen Foster on 48.70; new partnership Audrey Upton & Val Richards were fourth with 42.71% and the only ones to bid the diamond slam on Board 15.

What would you open with S: 7; H: 3 2; D: A K Q J 10 9 8 4; and C:A K? Partner only has 5HCP, but they do include the AS and a singleton heart and three diamonds?

n Last Tuesday North/South were led by Glenys Barton & Jean Walmsley on 55.83%; followed by Janet Stuchbury & Laura Von Tucher on 54.17%.

East / West were led by Val Richards & Graham Clarke on 67.50% followed by Ron Woolgar & Caelia Pinkney on 51.67%.
