WINDSURFING: Draycote Water

Draycote Warriors young windsurfers will test their talents against the region’s top Team15 clubs when they compete in the opening round of the 2011 RYA Team15 Midlands Inter-Club Challenge at Bartley Sailing Club on Saturday (14 May).

Team15 is the RYA’s nationwide network of more than 80 youth windsurfing clubs set up to make windsurfing more accessible and appealing to youngsters aged 15 and under, and last year Draycote’s young rookies got their first ever taste of competitive action in round two of the regional series, which was staged at their home venue at Draycote Water.

But with the sailors now having another year’s experience under their belts, Max Thurlow, Draycote Warriors’ Team15 co-ordinator, says his team are relishing the chance to start competing more often and putting a bit of pressure on the region’s top Team15 clubs.

He said: “It was a new experience for most of the sailors last year but they were really enthusiastic, keen to learn and got on fantastically well as mates, which really helped their progress. Many have been sailing for about a year now so it will be great for them to be able to see how they are doing against other sailors in the region.

“Team15 is not elite racing it is fun racing for kids that are new to, or just developing their skills in, the sport. These events give them the chance to get an early experience of being a bit more competitive. Many of Britain’s most successful young windsurfers, who are winning medals for Britain at top Youth and Junior international events, started windsurfing with Team15 and it would be great to see some of our young sailors progress in that way.”

This weekend’s event takes place at Bartley Sailing Club in Birmingham and will see six teams go head to head to claim the early series bragging rights.

Team15 allows kids to learn new skills and develop their racing talents under the guidance of specialist RYA coaches whilst having fun with their mates. Kit can be borrowed from the clubs and the cost of sessions is kept low.

Team15 is supported by industry leaders Tushingham/Starboard, Boards magazine and Neil Pryde.
