Princethorpe’s Inter-Girls Excel at Warwickshire Combined Events Championships

The start of the athletics season was marked not only by challenging gale force winds but also by team gold for Princethorpe College’s Inter-Girls who swept through the competition with all four athletes finishing in the top ten. The Combined Events meet was held at Nuneaton’s Pingles Stadium on May 5/6th with athletes aged 12-18 from across the county taking part.

Competing in an energy sapping seven events top Princethorpe heptathlete Millie Johnson proved what a good all-rounder she is by coming first overall. Naturally more at home with the sprints Millie managed to step up in the four field disciplines as well as the gruelling 800 metres; the final race of the day. Her dominance enabled a 29 point lead over the second placed athlete with Princethorpe team mates Reanne Popham in 3rd, Millie Christie 8th and Izzy Powell 9th. With 28 events under their belt the Year 10 girls were thrilled with their top podium finish.

Driving rain and bitter winds failed to allay Princethorpe’s Senior Boys’ team with Year 11’s Lloyd Ellis trailblazing in overall 2nd place and Zac Wiseman, Mikey Redmile and Jon Broughton bringing home the points to reward them with bronze team medals.

The top four placed athletes in each age group qualified for County representative honours so it was with satisfaction that Princethorpe’s Director of Sport Mr Neil McCollin saw Sixth Former and Scottish Indoor Pentathlon Champion Annabelle Pask defy injury to take silver. Such is Pask’s might in the heptathlon that despite having to withdraw from the 800 metres and take a standing javelin throw she still earned enough points for qualification.

Further congratulations go to the following Princethorpe athletes who battled the British spring weather to compete so heroically: Minor Boys; George Saunders and Ellis Chaplow, Minor Girls; Grace McGrory, Amelia Cunnington and Keeley Jarrett, Junior Girls; Hollie Moore, Charlotte Silvester and Anna Wells, Junior Boys; Harry Smith, Matty Rush and Jack Saunders.
