BOWLS: Try short match bowls

New sessions for the Over 50s

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Centre on Bruce Williams Way is inviting everyone aged 50 years and over to an afternoon of free bowls in February.

The leisure centre run by Better, the UK’s largest leisure provider, has joined forces with the Bowls Development Alliance to organise the taster session afternoon on the Saturday, February 7, with the aim of increasing the number of free sporting opportunities for the sport of bowls.

From 3:00-5:00pm there will be an afternoon of Short Mat Bowls, Table Tennis and Badminton. Also Better’s Healthwise Co-ordinator will be offering free health checks and advice and support on leading a healthy and active lifestyle. Tea and coffee will be available on the day and the afternoon activities are completely free of charge.

Following on from this, the centre will be launching a new 50 plus bowls project, which will begin on Wednesday 11 February from 11:00-12:00pm. The five-week project is available at no charge to participants. One of the objectives of the afternoon is to glean from the over 50 community their ideas for future projects and if there are specific clubs they would like to see launch at the centre.

Philip Hanrahan, Healthwise Co-ordinator comments; ‘Due to the inclusive nature of bowls, it can be played by anyone and everyone, regardless of age and ability. We hope locals will join us and help build opportunities for the community to live healthier lifestyle and fun, social environments.’
