Division 4

Rugby 2nd XI v Oakfield 1st XI

Following the abandoned game earlier in the season Rugby and Oakfield were keen for a good contest in this eagerly-awaited local derby.

In the re-structured league the division has proved very competitive and Rugby were the form side coming into this game chasing promotion, while Oakfield were looking to end a run of poor results which has seen them drop out of contention at the top of the table.

Richard Burnett

Richard Burnett

Oakfield skipper Richard Burnett won the toss for the first time in over a month and despite the warm weather asked Rugby to bat. Dave Odwell picked up the early wicket of Chohan but Rugby rebuilt through Rob Stipanovic (29) and Mo Sadiq (67) to reach 150-3.

Youngsters Scott Cluely (2-52) and Tom Marshal (3-51) produced good second spells for Oakfield as they fought back hard in the heat to reduce Rugby to 180-7 before Tom Mitchell (42 not out) worked well with the tail to take Rugby to 233 all out, an above par score in recent weeks.

Oakfield knew they would need to bat well to keep in contention, and despite losing an early wicket skipper Richard Burnett and Rob Harris (21) took Oakfield to 58 from 16 overs before Harris was second man out. Stewart Burnett joined his brother and the pair continued to build on the good platform, batting cautiously on a slow wicket but punishing loose deliveries.

The pair added 130 to put Oakfield in the driving seat before Johnny Sage removed skipper Richard Burnett for 86. At this point Oakfield needed 47 from nine overs and looked favourites. Sage, however, found some assistance in the wicket and Barker returned to bowl Gowdy.

With the run rate creeping up, the crucial wicket came in the 48th over when Stewart Burnett was run out for 81.

With 16 needed from the final over Oakfield continued to chase Rugby, with six needed from the last three balls.

Dave Odwell was caught on the boundary and with four needed from the last ball McManus was stumped to leave Oakfield three short and nine down, Sage picking up 3-36 at the end. While disappointed, Oakfield were pleased to have fought back well with both bat and ball and also to have played in a well fought game which was a great advert for local cricket.

Division 9 East

Oakfield 2nd XI v

Berkswell 3rd XI

Oakfield took on table-topping Berkswell knowing a win was vital to maintain any chance of catching the top two. Oakfield won the toss and elected to bat looking for maximum points, and after an early wicket skipper Kev Vince (42) and Neil Armstrong (49). Adam Stradling continued the good work with an unbeaten 53 while Shozab Mohammed (27) added some much needed impetus at the end as Oakfield closed on a competitive 216-6 from their 45 overs.

Berkswell made a solid start in response, although Luke Armstrong (4-47) did his best to keep Oakfield in contention. Unfortunately for Oakfield, Berkswell showed why they are top of the league, reaching their target in 39 overs to end Oakfield’s hopes of a top two finish.

Division 12 East

Corley 3rd XI v

Oakfield 3rd XI

Oakfield’s 3rd XI travelled to Coventry to take on Corley.

The hosts batted first and made 151 all out.

Herman Claasen, Jack Watts and Will O’Rourke picked up two wickets each, while there were singles for Rikesh Vaghela, Gurj Rupal and Werno Claasen in a good team performance.

Oakfield were confident they had the fire-power to chase this total down but despite all of the top four making starts, no-one made the telling contribution needed.

Brian Harris top-scored with 20 but a lower order collapse, including a hat-trick for Steven Whatsize, meant Oakfield were dismissed for just 98.
