Season starts this weekend for 2nds and 3rds
Warwickshire League Division 4
Oakfield 1st XI vs Bulkington 1st XI
Oakfield started their league campaign at home to Bulkington on Saturday. With the wet and mild winter followed by plenty of April showers, most sides were a little undercooked going into the start of the league campaign and Oakfield and Bulkington were no exceptions. Furthermore, the weather has made pitch-preparation difficult, and Oakfield were pleased to simply get the first game of the season played on Saturday.
Having lost the toss, Oakfield skipper Richard Burnett was delighted when the visitors surprisingly elected to bat. David Odwell soon opened up his account for the season, before Chris Smith (2-13) picked up 2 wickets in as many balls to reduce Bulkington to 22-3. Odwell bowled unchanged and picked up his 2nd wicket in his last over to finish with 2-25 as Bulkington struggled to set a total.
Only skipper Conneely with 30 batted with any fluency as Jamie Brightwell (2-22) also got in on the act. Ollie Vaughan made a welcome return after missing last season with a knee injury, and picked up Conneely on his way to 3-13 as Oakfield dismissed the visitors for just 82.
After tea Oakfield were looking for a steady start to dampen any thoughts Bulkington had of victory. Richard Burnett and Rob Harris provided this, before Harris was adjudged caught behind for 23. Stewart Burnett then joined his brother and the pair eased Oakfield to a 9 wicket victory, with skipper Richard ending unbeaten on 40 and Stewart 11 not out.
A comprehensive win for Oakfield at the start of the season who visit Kings Heath next week. The 2nd and 3rd XI’s start their campaigns too when they entertain North Warwickshire and Standard respectively.
