Willoughby Cricket Club took time to look back on another encouraging season at their Annual Presentation Evening held recently at the Rainsbrook Conference Centre in Rugby.

On the field, the club’s Saturday 1st XI had something of an up-and-down season to finish mid-table in Division 1 of the South Northants Cricket League (SNCL), although there is an optimistic view that a promotion push may be on the cards for 2016 providing all the club’s players are injury-free and consistently available for selection.

After being denied promotion from last season due to a league reshuffle, Willoughby’s 2nd XI made amends this time by securing promotion to Division 3 of the SNCL.

It was reward for another encouraging season of relative consistency, for having lost their opening game of the season the team went the remainder of the campaign unbeaten, albeit to only be pipped to the divisional title by a mere two points. However it was perhaps fitting that several more new players joining the club along with some from the junior and youth ranks continued to make their mark at this level and in doing so rightly press their claims for 1st team consideration.

If there was one disappointment it came with WCC’s midweek XI in the Rugby and District Cricket League (RDCL) as they finished bottom of Division 3 and fall to their lowest level in the midweek league for many years.

However that is tempered by further encouraging signs coming by way of the club’s Sunday friendly XI. Due to renewed interest, it was great to see the club’s fixture programme on a Sunday increased to that of previous years and it was well supported particularly by some of the club’s up and coming youth cricketer with some useful performances – both collectively and individually.

Junior and youth cricket at Willoughby continues to go from strength to strength. The club again fielded teams at Under 11, Under 13 and Under 15 levels in the RDCL – the under 13s (of which most are Under 12 or younger) finishing runners-up in their division. Plus the club again saw a healthy increase in its membership at Kwik Cricket level, many players of which will move into the hard ball game in the next season or so.

One of the biggest cheers of the night was rightly reserved for the Willoughby Ladies Tip and Run team, who won the local T & R league for the first time in five years.

Club President and Treasurer Eric Palmer presented all junior cricket members of the club with individual medals in recognition for their efforts and caps to those making their senior debuts.

Eric also presented the following senior cricket awards:-
