Australian cycle speedway star to coach new riders

The new Brandon Bees Cycle Speedway team race their first ever away match this Tuesday (May 19), when they travel to the Wednesfield Dragons in the Black Country in the Midlands League division 2.

Brandon, who have taken over the Bretford track in Brandon Road, Bretford, will be hoping to put on a good display at the large Wednesfield track. They will be attired in their new yellow and black racing shirts, with the famous Coventry Bees Speedway logo of the 1960s emblazoned on the front.

Brandon will be hoping to field local teenage hotshot Kyle Roberts, who is nearing recovery from his broken arm. The rest of the team will be current Coventry riders, who will ride `on loan` to Brandon to get the club off the ground.

Plans are being drawn up by the new Brandon club to promote `come and try it` evenings at the Brandon Road venue to attract a new generation of new riders. These are expected to take place on Tuesday evenings in the summer.

World class Australian Cycle Speedway star Bobby McMillan, who lives in Bretford, is earmarked to coach and train the new young riders at the new weekly sessions. McMillan is expected to be included in the Australian Test match team, when they tour Britain in August.

The Brandon Bees name has been revived from the former Brandon team of the same name, who rode in the 1970s in the car park track at Coventry Speedway Stadium. Officials hope this will help promote the new Cycle Speedway club.
