Marton rider top in over 65s race again at Thruxton motor racing circuit

Barrie Mitchell, 68, from Marton rode out of his skin to retain his British Cycling Time Trials National Closed Circuit Championships for riders 65 and over, on Sunday.

The event took place on the Thruxton Motor Racing circuit in Hampshire for the second year, and the Team Jewson-MI Racing-Polypipe rider notched up his 22nd British Championship, as well as retaining the title he won last season.

Mitchell completed the 11.7 mile race (five laps) in a time of 27 mins 14 secs. A month earlier Barrie, won the British Open Circuit Championships, repeating last year’s performances by winning both.

This Championship victory, brings the team’s 2015 tally to 21 British Championships. No other team in the UK can boast that tally, and there are more championships still to be fought out this year, so the total is expected to rise.

Mitchell’s team mate and team boss Mick Ives from Baginton, could only manage 3rd fastest in the 75+ race, with a time of 31-28, failing to retain the title he won in 2014, despite going 1 min and 11 secs faster this year.

Russell Green made up the team with a time of 27-32.

This weekend the team will send a very team squad to contest both the Midland series event at Misterton Hall near Lutterworth on Saturday and the National Trophy series race at Derby on Sunday. World Masters Champion Phil Roach from Rugby is expected to represent the team in both events.
