GOLF: New captains elected at Whitefields

Members congratulated for raising over £5,000 for charities in 2019

Whitefields golf club held their annual general meeting last Friday and elected their new captains.

Men’s Club Captain is Mark Ritchie with Richard Hadley his Vice Captain.

The Ladies Captain is Julie Ritchie, creating a husband and wife pairing of captains for this coming year.

The Seniors new Captain is David Elliott with Stephen Edwards as his Vice Captain.

Collectively the captains have agreed that their Captains Charity fundraising in 2020 will be for the Alzheimer’s Charity. Established in 1979, it appeals for funds to aid care and research for people with dementia and their carers.

The retiring Club Captain, Ivor Bourne, expressed gratitude to all members and visitors who helped to raise £3,929 for the club’s 2019 Captains Charity which was the Spinal Injuries Association.

Other sections also held charity events with £929 raised for Guide Dogs and other amounts collected by the Ladies section for Wear it Pink and by the Seniors for Prostate Cancer.

Nick Hoare, the club secretary thanked all those who had been active in raising charity funds and those who donated generously amounting to a total of £5,410 in 2019 across Whitefields Golf Club.

The Director of Golf, David Mills explained the course improvements, the development of the youth programme and the introduction of the new driving range system of ‘Toptracer’ which is proving to be very popular for golfers of all ages and abilities.

Nick Hoare reported that there was an outstanding increase in membership during the year in all sections and welcomed all new members to the club.

There has been an increase in lower handicapped players and he informed the meeting that the club will be fielding a scratch team again in this coming year alongside the existing Avon league team, the Seniors and the Ladies teams.

More open competitions are also planned for 2020, starting with the Ladies 3 ball Alliance Open on Thursday, April 23 followed by the Seniors Pairs Open on Friday, April 24. These competitions are now open for entries.

At Ansty Golf Centre the Winter Alliance Week 12 winner was Keith Thompson with 36 points ahead of Graham Hanna on 32.

The Over 55’s Stableford was won by Dave Jackson on 31 points with William McCarthy runner-up, also on 31.
