ICE HOCKEY: Dunchurch brothers selected to play for Great Britain

The world of elite ice hockey is opening up for two brothers from Dunchurch.

Both are assisted by GLL through the Rugby Sports Awards and the new year starts with news of them both receiving international selections for Great Britain teams.

Austin and Rhodes Mitchell-King are now furthering their academic and ice hockey careers in Canada.

This past September Rhodes joined his brother at The Hill Academy in Vaughan, Toronto.

Austin went there in September 2018 and ended last season as the top forward on The Hill’s Under 18 team.

Both boys played their ice hockey in the UK in the Coventry Blaze Academy and both represented Midlands teams at various age groups.

Rhodes played for England at Under 13,14 & 15 levels and Austin has represented Great Britain at Under 18 level for the past 2 seasons, winning World Championship Gold in Estonia in 2018.

This season Austin has been selected for the Great Britain Under 20 team and travelled with them on January 1 to Vilnius in Lithuania for their IIHF World Championship Tournament (Division 2A).

All Great Britain’s games are being televised live on the FreeSports channel (until January 12).

Just before Christmas, Rhodes attended the final trials in Dumfries for this season’s Great Britain Under 18 team. The selected team has just been announced and Rhodes will be playing for GB in Estonia in March at the IIHF U18 World Championship Tournament (Division 2A).

Academically both boys are following the Ontario equivalent of the UK’s A Levels which Austin will finish in June 2020. Then he hopes to join a junior team in the USA for at least one gap year before going to University.
