EXPLORER CHALLENGE SCHEME AND RESULTS
Nearly 50 junior orienteers, including many beginners, have been enthusiastically joining the eXplorer Awards Scheme at Octavian Droobers Wednesday evening summer series of events around Coventry and Warwickshire parks and woodlands.
After the launch two months ago eight juniors have now progressed through, from ‘Acorn’ 10 controls, ‘Tree’ 25 controls, ‘Copse’ 50 controls, to earn their ‘Forest’ certificate after locating 100 controls in the past few weeks at local and regional events.
At the Dales Town and Country Weekend Sheila Carey was 1st W70 on the Green 4.7km course in 47.50mins at Yockenthwaite and Peter Carey 2nd M70 on the same course taking 52.16mins. Mike Snell M60 was 7th in 50.26mins in the Mens Super Vet 5.7km Urban course around Settle and Giggleswick.
Liz Phillips W50 won the 5.1km Womens Vet Course in 46.21mins at the South Midlands Milton Keynes Urban.
There were a trio of 3rd places: Alfie Bullus M16 took 26.13mins on the 3.4km Junior Men course, Chris McCartney M45 went round in 35.11mins on the Mens Vet 6km course and Mike Hampton M70 took 32.30mins on the 4km Mens Ultra Vet course.
Over 60 competitors enjoyed the Ryton Pools Wednesday summer evening event organised by Liam Chapple. The winners of each of the 4 courses were: 2.2km Yellow course Josie Smart W12 18.42mins, 3km Orange course Nathan Chapple M14 25.36mins, Medium 3.8km course Oliver Lunn M14 33.35mins and Long 4.8km course with 29 controls Felix Lunn M14 38.01mins.
On Wednesday, July 6 at Brueton Park, Solihull, the club is organising an event suitable for beginners and experienced orienteers with starts from 6pm until 7.30pm. Runners and walkers of all ages, 5 – 85 years, and abilities are welcome to come along to try out this outdoor adventure navigation sport. Help is available to all newcomers.
