GB SELECTIONS, UNITED WORLD GAMES AND LEAGUE RESULTS
British Orienteering have announced selections for the Autumn Development Competitions and congratulations go to club junior Harrison McCartney who will represent GB at the Junior European Championships to be held in Germany in October and to Matthew Elkington M20 and William Gardner M21 who will represent GB in the Antwerp International Sprint Meeting in Belgium in September.
Peter Markham M12 and Chris Markham M10 took part in the United World Games held this weekend in Austria. Competing in Orienteering, the first time the sport has been included along with 9 other sporting disciplines, Peter came 3rd on Day 1 and 4th on Day 2, Chris came 7th and 6th respectively in the under 12 category.
Octavian Droobers are currently over 1000 points ahead in the West Midlands league and the event held at Brockhampton, Worcestershire and organised by Harlequins Orienteering club, attracted a high number of club members. Noticeably there were many club juniors competing for their colour badges at this level C event. Seeking white badges were Tilly Flippance who came 1st on the short White course taking 23.58mins on the 1.4km course and Edward Powell 4th in 30.51mins. Finley Flippance M10 was 1st on the Yellow 1.8km course taking 33.14mins.
Florence Lunn W12 came 1st on the Orange 2.3km course in 22.41mins and Nathan Chapple M12 3rd in 25.45mins. The top 3 places were all taken by M14 club juniors on the Light Green 3.1km course with 110 metres of climb. Felix Lunn took 26.07mins to find the 8 controls, Oliver Flippance 30.50mins and Oliver Lunn 31.55mins.
On the short Green 2.6km course with 150 metres of climb Roger Hailey M75 came 2nd in 39.11mins and Ben Flippance M35 was 3rd in 44.53mins. Top junior on the Green 3.7km course with 185 metres of climb and 5th overall was Sam Leadley M16 who took 43.28mins to find the 11 controls.
The long Blue 6km course with 260 metres of climb saw a trio of OD seniors take top places: Matthew Elkington M20 1st in 47.14mins, Alistair Powell M35 2nd 51.04mins, Tom Jeffries M45 3rd 52.44mins and David Leadley M50 was 5th in 54.20mins.
The next club event takes place on Wednesday 1st July at Brueton Park, Solihull, with starts from 6 until 7.30pm. Full details about start times, courses and costs will be on the club website. Runners and walkers of all ages, 5 – 85 years, and abilities will be welcome to come along to try out this outdoor adventure navigation sport. Help is available to all newcomers.
