RUGBY: Newbold go top as Old Laurentians’ game postponed

Welsh win over Trinity Guild at Alwyn Road

Newbold took over at the top of Midlands 2 West (South) after beating Droitwich 36-11 away on Saturday. They had been level on points with leaders Old Laurentians, but OLs are now second with a game in hand after their fixture at Old Yardleians was called off.

In what is set to be a thrilling run-in to the season, Newbold now have 71 points, OLs 66 and third-placed Banbury, who beat Nuneaton Old Eds at the weekend are on 57.

Rugby St Andrews tripped up in their tricky fixture at St Ives, going down 17-3. They remain third in Midlands 3 East (South) on 50 points, behind Rushden & Higham and Vipers, who are level on 56 points. Vipers beat Rushden & Higham 28-19 on Saturday.

Rugby Lions, who won a friendly with Old Laurentians at Fenley Field, are still top of Midlands 4 West (South), with Evesham second on 46 points and Claverdon third on 42. Evesham beat Claverdon 20-3 on Saturday, while Lions had a week off from the league.

Rugby Welsh returned to league action on Saturday with a 10-3 win over Trinity Guild at Alwyn Road. Welsh stay fifth and Trinity Guild sixth in Midlands 5 West (South), with 33 and 27 points respectively. Leaders Alcester and Birmingham Civil Service are level on 52 points.
