With no senior action at Fenley Field on Saturday, OLs Colts took on local rivals St Andrews in front of a good crowd, the home side eventually wearing down spirited resistance by Saints to stretch away to a handsome win in the second half, writes Bill Wallis.

OLs led by 15-0 at the break and it had taken three fine passages of play to penetrate the Saints defence. First centre Olly Morton seared through the visitors’ defence with pace and power to touch down; then wing Cameron Buxton twice finished off sweeping three quarter moves to score after forward power had sucked in the defence.

Saints appeared unwilling to use their backline, their forwards attempting to batter their way through.

But they were halted in their tracks by some heavyweight defence and although they did well to retain the ball through the phases they were invariably going backwards.

This took its toll of the Saints team and OLs added six more tries in the second half as they cut loose.

Ed Taylor was first to cross, followed over by Josh Greenwood, who was proving a handful for Saints’ defence with his powerful surges. Then hooker Jake Love added two tries in quick succession, running like a centre threequarter; Sam McCosker followed up a clever kick ahead to go over and Tom Parker crossed for the last to cap a powerful display by the prop.

The Saints side stuck gamely to their task and were unlucky not to get over themselves after pressure on the home line late on, but they came up against a strong home team who were right on song.

Old Laurentians 1st XV return to league action this weekend welcoming Spartans (Midlands) to Fenley Field. OLs are fifth in Midlands 2 West (South) and their visitors 11th.
