Old Laurentians host Newbold at Fenley Field on Saturday

League positions and form go out of the window this weekend for the first encounter of the season between Newbold and Old Laurentians at Limetree Avenue on Saturday, kicking off at 2.15pm.

Although it may not be quite such a mouth-watering prospect as last year’s derbies, when both were vying for the league title, this is still an much eagerly awaited clash between the town’s top rugby sides.

The Parkfield Road side may have had the better start to the campaign so far, but that will count for nothing come kick off, writes Alan Bale.

OLs have improved rapidly over the last few weeks and recorded their first Midlands 1 East victory over Matlock recently, which will have increased confidence all round.

Newbold have performed well so far, but will be on their guard and be taking nothing for granted.

They will be well aware that whoever is up most for this game will most likely be the victors. It is going to take a huge performance from Newbold to do that.

Spectators are advised to get up to Lime Tree Avenue early, as it’s anticipated a large crowd will enjoy what promises to be a cracking match. Let’s make sure that we have plenty of red and black there!

Newbold Minis games – U7s, U8s, U9s and U11s

The last two weeks have seen all sides playing St Andrews and Rugby Lions.

It’s been very much a learning experience for the Newbold teams, not having played too many matches, lots new to rugby and the older U9s team just starting with contact rugby.

But in true Newbold spirit, all sides have performed really well, but more importantly, had lots of fun and really enjoyed themselves. All of the Minis are improving, but special mentions to Zac for his demon tackling, Raimone for his first ever try after just a couple of weeks of touching a rugby ball for the first ever time (we can learn the rules later!) Leon for good all round play and Callum for his effort and good listening!

Well done to the coaches, the ladies in the kitchen and all the parents for their fantastic support - #upthebold
