Doubles victory in Tunisia for Rugby’s young star

A third junior ITF doubles tournament win in three months – each with different partners – was celebrated by Rugby’s young tennis star Jake Hersey last week in Kelibia, Tunisia.

There he also reached his first junior ITF singles semi-final.

Jake and his doubles partner won a thrilling final in a third set tie break 10-7 in a match that they didn’t finish until 10.45pm, which was an exceptionally late time for juniors.

He also had an excellent run at the same venue in the singles to defeat several players ranked higher and who are older than him before losing out in the semi-final.

A reward for Jake’s progress also came through in receiving the excellent news that he has been selected to represent Great Britain at the Under-16 European Championships in Moscow in July.

The call up to the Under-16s has come a year early for his age, so he is looking forward to what should be a fantastic experience and challenge.

In April, Jake also won the Nike Junior International U18 ITF Doubles at Nottingham, teaming up with fellow Edgbaston Priory Club player Luke Oakley, to beat players from Great Britain, Italy, Switzerland and France over five rounds.

He is grateful to Babolat, Tennis First and SportsAid for their support.
