Taekwondo students team up with German friends

Over the Bank Holiday weekend Vendon Wright and 11 of his taekwondo students went over to Germany for their annual twinning event.

On Friday they were met at Frankfurt airport, brought to their hosts homes and then taken on a torchlight tour of Russelsheim’s fortress. The fortress has been used to guard the town for hundreds of years and they were shown artefacts that have been found during the excavation of the castle which date back to the 12th century.

On Saturday morning they met at the sports centre in Russelsheim for the training and competition side of the twinning. It was an amazing morning with lots of action but unfortunately Russelsheim won the annual competition.

The second stage of the event was the demonstration by each club. Many students demonstrated their taekwondo skills, including breaking two boards in the air and one student even reached heights of over nine feet to kick a board. Rugby was triumphant in the demonstration!

In the afternoon they were taken to Hochheim for a guided tour. There were some interesting miniature houses, very different from those in England. Some of the houses, although very beautiful, were showing signs of ageing with slanted roofs.

Queen Victoria loved to visit Hochheim and was a great fan of the wine made there. On Saturday evening the Rugby Taekwondo group met up with the Rugby horseriding team at the annual Hassloch Fair.

Sunday morning was the final part of the twinning with the annual bowling tournament!

This was won by Russelsheim so they were the overall victors for 2016 and retain the trophy for the year. Afterwards, the tired students spent the afternoon soaking up the lovely sunshine by the pool, drinking German cocktails and beer!

On Monday morning they were treated to a tour of the German TV Station ZDF – Germany’s equivalent to the BBC. They were allowed to film themselves in the news studio, true professionals!

It was an amazing weekend spent with friends that the students look forward to every year. Vendon and his Taekwondo team train at the Rugby Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Centre every Saturday and are now looking forward to organising their next twinning celebration.
