Parkin goes on a brilliant run to win showpiece final

Opponent Ian Carter came flying out of the blocks with a break of 52, only for Parkin to pinch the frame with runs of 16, 15 and a clearance to the pink of 31.

Carter won the second with a break of 42 but only scored seven points in the next three frames as Parkin produced superb one-visit snooker to reel off breaks of 58,66 and 78 to put him one frame away from victory.

Breaks of 24 and 20 put Parkin in command in the sixth but Carter responded with a 26.

He failed to get on the final black, but produced a decent safety only for Parkin to effortlessly sink the long black and secure the title.

Parkin also claimed the under-35s final, recording a 44 break on his way to a 3-0 win over Harbury 2nds’ Mike Hopkins.

A superb break of 55 helped Warwick Cons’ Ben Deller beat Jason Humphries (Kenilworth S&S) in the Fred Cowell final.

It was one of a notable run of successes for Deller, who overwhelmed Frames’ Billy Morton 5-1 in the six reds showpiece.

Deller also teamed up with Cons teammate Steve Lang to overcome Parkin and Mark Buckley (Kenilworth S&S) in the pairs final.

Deller fashioned a clearance of 88 in the third to take him and Lang to within one frame of the title.

Parkin and Buckley edged ahead in the fourth before a late 31 from Lang gave the initiative to the Warwick pair.

Twice Lang potted championship ball only for Parkin to lay two superb snookers.

Deller failed to escape from the second one but a botched safety from Buckley allowed Lang to nail match ball for a third time.

A simple blue and pink then sealed the title.

To complete a memorable week, Deller produced runs of 36 and 42 as Warwick Cons beat Kenilworth S&S in the three-man final.

Kenilworth did have the consolation of the Courier Cup, with a ruthless first-leg performance in the handicap competition opening up a 6-0 lead on Home Guard.

David Melhuish (51), Mark Buckley (32 & 33), Jason Humphries (31) and Mark Hanlon (32) all got among the balls for Kenilworth and despite Lyndon Bufton and Gez Jones reducing the deficit in the return leg, further wins for Glenn Powell and Kelvin Handley wrapped up an 8-2 success.

Jason Harvey and Neil Chamberlain won their frames in both the home and away legs as Priors 2nds, with the benefit of a nine-point advantage, beat Bishops Tachbrook 9-4 to lift the Stan Ward Cup.

Steve Williams won the silverware-deciding frame.

Harbury 2nds’ Tony Baylis secured his fourth over-50s title in a row with a convincing 2-0 win over Harbury first-teamer Bob Hollway.
