Perry pushes former world number one to the limit

Kenilworth’s Sarah-Jane Perry lost out in the final of the British Universities and Colleges Sport Squash Championships to former world number one Vanessa Atkinson.

Perry had overcome Georgia Jennings 9/1. 9/5, 9/3, Natalie Pritchard 11/3, 11/7, 11/9 and Kirsty McPhee 8/11, 14/12, 11/9, 13/11 to reach the final where she was pitted against top seed and former World number 1 Vanessa Atkinson.

Second seed Perry showed no nerves, despite losing the first game and deservedly levelled the match by winning the second 11/5.

Perry just failed to convert game points in the third game as Atkinson tired, but the top seed showed her experience to retain her title with a 11/8 win in the fourth.

However, Perry will take heart from the fact she has troubled two of the world’s top ten players in the last month.

Meanwhile, Perry was part of the Kenilworth men’s 1sts team which saw off visiting Sutton to keep alive their faint hopes of winning the top flight.

Perry won in five and despite Hugo Diamond’s loss Kenilworth were in control thanks to Steve Townsend’s impressive straight-games victory.

Guy Pearson fought back from a game down to seal the match win, leaving the crowd to enjoy a fine exhibition of squash at number one string.

Professional pride was at stake as Kenilworth’s Chris Fuller (world number 146) met Chris Truswell (world number 123).

Fuller lost a close first game but forged ahead, taking the next two.

The pace increased during the fourth but Fuller took an early lead which he never relinquished.
