RUGBY: Memorable end to sad season for Newbold
Future looks bright with weekend of successes
Newbold on Avon RFC end a difficult season on top of the world!
‘The Bold’ ended an exciting if also sad season last weekend with some great successes and indications that the future looks extremely bright for the Parkfield Road club, writes Damian Gray.
Saturday saw the England Touch U18s squads make the Newbold club their home for the day as they prepared for the European Championships in Holland this August, followed by a hard-fought win for the 2nd Team against a very strong Daventry side in the Clonmel Cup semi-final.
Newbold, with a serious injury and a yellow card in the first five minutes, made it difficult for themselves going down 14-0 straight away, but with some hard work and great team spirit the ‘Bold powered back and with a try in the final seconds securing a 24-17 win, with a final in two weeks to look forward to against Lutterworth.
Sunday brought even more success with the 1st team travelling to Coventry for the County Cup final against Sutton Coldfield, after narrowly missing out on a National 3 play-off place only last week. A mainly one-sided game saw Newbold lift the cup in a 28-3 encounter.
Closer to home the Newbold Falcons Ladies’ team visited Rugby St Andrews for round 2 of the Midlands Ladies Touch League. With 4-0, 3-0 and 1-0 wins respectively over Old Laurentians, St Andrews and Redditch, the Falcons finished 3rd on the day to place them 3rd in the league in only their second season.
With a growing Minis and Juniors section, an improving Ladies section and a continuously successful Seniors section, Newbold RFC is going from strength to strength.
This season has been a difficult one for our club, with the loss of two significant members of our family, but this weekend gives a good indication that ‘The Bold’ will go on in the spirit of those we have lost. Thank you for laying the foundations that make these types of weekends possible.
