RUGBY ROUND-UP: Wins for Newbold and Lions
Great weekend for both league leaders
League leaders Newbold and Rugby Lions both won on Saturday, but the news wasn’t so good for Old Laurentians, Rugby St Andrews and Rugby Welsh.
At Bugbrooke, in Midlands East 1, Newbold beat their hosts 27-15, dropping them down to tenth in the division. The Parkfield Road side are now on 100 points, nine ahead of second-placed Kettering, with Old Northamptonians third on 82. At the weekend Kettering beat 11th-placed Leighton Buzzard 68-8, while ONs won 45-12 at ninth-placed Wellingborough.
There are no league games next weekend (18th) but on March 25 all the fixtures are home ones and Newbold will welcome 13th-placed Dronfield.
Rugby Lions are now seven points ahead at the top of Midlands 2 West (South) after beating Southam 25-13. Spartans are now second but level on 70 points with Silhillians after beating them 22-17 on Saturday.
Lions travel to Sils next weekend (18th) for the final of the RFU Midlands Intermediate Cup, with a place in the national final at Twickenham then just one more win away.
When the league resumes on the 25th, Lions host 11th-placed Barkers Butts, who lost 17-19 to ninth-placed Pinley on Saturday. Sils host Southam, and Spartans visit Leamington.
After their fantastic performance last week against Luton, Old Laurentians surprisingly lost 45-14 at eighth-placed Market Harborough, who move up to seventh. OLs, who were second in Midlands 2 East (South) and challenging for the play-offs, have slipped a couple of places in a very close top of the table. Peterborough, who won 27-12 at tenth-placed Stamford, are the runaway leaders on 81 points, with Oadby Wyggestonians second and Oundle third, both on 63 just a point ahead of OLs. Olney are fifth on 58 with Oakham sixth on 50.
In Saturday’s results Oadby beat Oakham 31-27 and Oundle beat Belgrave 62-3. Oadby are OLs’ next opponents at Fenley Field on the 25th.
Rugby St Andrews suffered a narrow defeat, going down 18-16 at Upton on Severn. Saints stay seventh in Midlands 3 West (South) with Upton tenth. Saints’ visitors to John Tomalin Way on the 25th will be bottom-of-the-table Bedworth, who lost by a single point 30-31 to Old Wheatleyans on Saturday.
In the battle for third place in Midlands 5 West (South) Rugby Welsh have to swap places with Birmingham Exiles, who beat them 48-19 on Saturday.
Welsh don’t have another game until April 1, when they travel to fifth-placed Atherstone.
