U10s: Sunday saw a very tight, very hard fought win for a well-drilled Newbold over Rugby St Andrews by 6 tries to 5.

The crowd were treated to an excellent display of handling by both sides and some bone-crunching tackles.

Two very well matched sides, as the scores suggest, but with Newbold having the speed and ability to clear St Andrews out of the rucks, they just had the edge to win the match.

U11s: It was great to see Newbold back onto the U11s circuit for a local derby. The Newbold boys are only into their first month, but will be a side to beat in the future if their steady improvement continues.

First period saw Matty F being the lead support player and he kept the ball alive for others. His clearing out at the ruck was particularly good. A lovely tackle by Deren stopped a likely try.

Ollie D had several powerful runs and was rewarded with a hat-trick. Matty S made a solid break and touched down for a try.

The runners in the second period showed some good rucking skills and kept the ball alive for extended periods. Jake’s turnover and ball presentation skills were excellent and Robbie again showed solid straight running. Both had tries as a reward.

Wozza’s kicking was accurate and Callum’s support play and offload always found a teammate. Evan showed a good turn of speed and also went over for three.

Several infringements and a series of forward passes led to some Newbold advantage in the third period and the reds went over for a well earned score after some prolonged pressure. Archy came on for Evan after a couple more tries and he showed some good turn of speed.

Jake’s ripping play and continued mauling and Wozza’s tireless tackling pressure in the fourth opened up several gaps and scores by Archy, Joe, Wozza, Callum and Finlay finished the game.

It was a really exciting contest to watch. The enthusiasm of the Newbold players was plain to see and it will be interesting to see how they fare next year when they have more training and match play to call upon.
