Unbeaten run comes to an end

Daventry II 45

AEI (Rugby) RFC 29

The unbeaten streak in 2011 came to an end after a free-flowing and frenetic game where both teams swapped scores for most of the second half after a tightly contested first half.

A scratch side which included some guest Cosby players suffered an early loss when AEI captain and prop, Andy Clark, suffered a recurrence of a tour injury and had to go off after only 15 minutes. This lead to uncontested scrums and the AEI’s downfall, the youthful opposition pack being able to conserve energy and therefore provide closer support to their backs than their more mature opponents.

First up defensive tackling and organisation were sadly lacking for the AEI and only exceptional last-ditch tackling from Joe Bott and Rob Bollen prevented the concession of more scores. In fact both players showed off their attacking capabilities throughout the match, making line breaks and between them were responsible for all but seven points, the other try and subsequent conversion being scored by Jonathan Jenkins.

Due to the unexpected re-organisation of the pack, the AEI forwards were unable to match the dynamism of the Daventry forwards and conceded tries from a close range scrum which Daventry converted with some slick passing and, even more gallingly, from a Daventry kick off which, due to the Sun, the AEI eight were unable to collect and allowed Daventry to gallop through to the line almost unopposed.

AEI never gave up and carved out several opportunities to score and keep the match in the balance. In fact had the finishing been more clinical in the first half, the AEI could have been the first to put points on the board. Mention must go to the Salters who joined a growing band of fathers and sons who have taken the field together for the AEI.
