RUGBY: Droitwich first league visitors to OLs

OLs open their league campaign in Midlands 2 West with a home fixture against Droitwich at Fenley Field on Saturday, kick-off 3pm.

In three of the last four seasons the league fixture planners have paired OLs with the Worcestershire side in the opening and final games of the season and they were the last visitors to Fenley Field in April to round off the league campaign.

On that occasion a bonus point win would have seen them rise to second place and earn a play-off for promotion.

But although they prevailed narrowly over OLs in a 25-21 victory they couldn’t clinch the vital bonus point as OLs came back at them hard in a thrilling second half after falling 18-0 behind in the first period.

Since Droitwich were promoted back to this league, OLs hold a 4-2 advantage in wins over them and all the signs point to another close encounter.

The Bilton side will be in confident mood after their comprehensive win on Saturday over one of last season’s form sides at Lutterworth.

Two exciting newcomers to the club, Lee Hersey and Joe Shore, are expected to feature in the match; and former skipper and back row forward Glenn Todd will be returning to league action for the first time in almost two years after recovering from a serious knee injury.

There will be a warm welcome at Fenley Field for all rugby fans deprived by recent events of their Saturday afternoon entertainment. Entry is free, match programmes are just £3 and for any early arrivals the bar will be open from 12.30pm.
