Tournament at Old Coventrians
Old Coventrians RFC hosted an impromptu ‘mini speed tournament’ last Sunday with Keresley also fielding a side
U12s: Saints got off to a solid start, holding steady against a physical Coventry side. Some good play by Saints saw them move towards Cov’s try line only to be pushed back into their own half shortly after. Both teams wanted to score badly but it was Coventry who scored twice before half time.
Another solid start from Saints, with good passing and ball control finally giving them the try they deserved. Both teams looking hungry for the win saw some great team efforts but for all Saints’ good work some small errors gifted the final try of the match to Coventry.
U9s: With the pitch being a bit sticky underfoot, the guys set about the opposition with what will become our trademark tackling. Both Saints’ sides showed different styles. One team had very quick flat lines going up in defence which really closed down the opposition. This resulted in some hard tackling and numerous turnovers after the seventh tackle which showed steady defence.
The first game for that side resulted in a 0-0 draw, showing how closely fought it was. The first game for the other side was very equal. Both Andrews and Old Covs were slower in defence and there was more opportunity to show strength in running.
Three tries for Saints in our group in that first game was very promising. A tendency to hold back too much by one of our sides when they were in defence created some space for the opposition fast players. A tendency to overrun the lines too quickly by Saints’ other team exposed us with a good sidestep.
It really is becoming a very tactical game and everyone needs to be awake and aware of our team-mates. As the guys played more the tackling became more ferocious and there was some excellent offloads to players in support. The high number of games really gave us a chance to see our players perform. The guys are really coming together as a team and show some real spirit in both attack and defence.
It was our first time at the seventh tackle turnover and the boys coped well with the pressure. No one player can take credit for the performance, it was a real team effort which was enjoyed by all.
Old Covs and Keresley will remember us as being a strong side and one to look out for! Well done to all you players who scored- but remember it was the team’s tackling that got you over the line.
U8s: Solid tagging and running into spaces – not contact – saw a well-drilled Under 8s team perform well in a triangular tournament with Old Covs and Keresley RFC.
Good angles of running from Ollie Morris-Nicholls, Gareth Wylie and Lucia King saw off Old Covs. Whilst on the other pitch, Dan Twigger’s direct running and offloading unlocked the Keresley defence for Louis Kavanagh and Luke Murray to run up the scoreboard. An excellent performance on a testing surface.
Saints are always looking for players to join our growing team, please come along either on Wednesdays at 6.30pm or Sundays at 10am for training. Also see our Twitter feed > @JuniorSaintsRFC for updates.
