Second warm-up for Rugby St Andrews
Saints first pre-season trial game against Old Wheatleyans, played over four 20-minute periods, proved to be a closely contested and competitive exercise. Both sides took the opportunity to try out various combinations and as a result continuity suffered.
However, Saints’ new coaching team of Craig Jones and Alex Williams were reasonably satisfied with the outcome and relieved that a number of returning injured were able to put in demanding stints.
Except for a first quarter mismatch when Saints conceded two tries, the remaining hour saw both sides playing good attacking rugby producing a brace of tries apiece.
A second trial will take place at Pinley this Saturday and the competitive season opens with a tough away game at Dunlop in the first round of the Warwickshire Shield. The Coventry side won the Midlands West 3 league to gain promotion, losing just one home game in the process.
The sides have met just twice in recent years with Dunlop gaining narrow victories in the Midlands final of the National Vase and then in the final of the Warwickshire Shield. Hopefully it will be third time lucky.
Saints are still looking to recruit new players and anyone interested is welcome to attend training sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7pm at Ashlawn Road.
