Rugby Welsh RFC has been deeply saddened by the recent passing away of club legend Roy Davies. Roy was a former captain, Chairman, President and Life member of our club. His commitment, leadership and loyalty to our club over several decades was immense and he will be fondly remembered by us all.

He was a powerful front row forward captaining the club regularly during the early 1960’s. Roy played for the club for numerous years before moving on to the administrative side, where he would play a huge and successful role in ensuring the continued success of the club. A larger than life character Roy would rarely miss a Saturday afternoon watching the team play and then on Sunday lunchtimes, putting his forthright opinions across at selection meetings !

He was a hugely respected figure within the local rugby and wider community, as well as by our members, who knew of his passion and commitment to Rugby Welsh. He helped, along with other committee members, to see the club through difficult times in the late 1980’s and 1990’s which has never been forgotten. Above all Roy enjoyed the social aspects that Rugby brought, being a great conversationalist and having a friendly personality, who would always have time to speak to people.

Roy continued to attend our Vice Presidents Days during recent years, watching the team at Alwyn Road, and was always immensely pleased at the progress the club was continuing to make. It was a privilege to know Roy and he touched the lives of many people in a positive way. He will never be forgotten and the club wishes to pass its condolences to his wife Pearl, his son Gareth and the wider family.
