Runners hunting in packs but Godiva’s Clarke escapes for victory yet again

Kenilworth Runners showed their strength in depth again at the Northbrook 10k in Coventry, with seven runners in the first ten positions and 43 runners completing the race.

Daniel Clarke of Coventry Godiva Harriers won the race, which incorporated the Warwickshire County 10k Championships, in 32:59, pulling away from a posse of Kenilworth athletes to follow up his victory in the Ryton 5.

However, it was Kenilworth who won the senior men’s team prize, with Andrew Siggers second in 33:05 followed by Paul Andrew (3rd in 33:09), Rich Simkiss (4th in 33:13) and Phil Gould, who finished fifth overall and first MV35 in 33:49.

Connor Carson was next home in sixth position in 34:13 which improved his club record WAVA age category score to 84.9 per cent.

Men’s club captain Stephen Page finished eighth in 34:42, with Stuart Hopkins tenth in 35:01. Dave Pettifer (41:20) claimed first MV65.

Victor Garanto was the first Spa Strider home, finishing 14th overall in 36:10.

Kevin White was less than a minute behind in 37:04 (25th).

Paul Edwards ran a PB of 38:06 for 38th and was followed by Luca Tomaselli (64th) in 39:30 and Ben Parkinson (68th) in 39:56.

Leamington C&AC had 16 members present including medal winners for age groups and the county awards.

John Knibb, running as second claim, took the honours for MV45 in both with a consistent run of 36:12 for 15th, closely followed by Mark Urbanowski, who was just two places and four seconds back.

George Loveday was back to form with 37:07 (26th) to take the under-20 award.

Sue Harrison, returning from a long spell on the sidelines, continued her racing comeback with 29th in 37:22 for third in the county and first in her age group.

Harrison’s time was only two seconds slower than her winning time last year.

Striders’ ladies were pipped to the team prize by Coventry Godiva despite strong runs from Mel Venables, who ran a personal best of 40:00 (5th F35), Jo Kirby (10th lady in 40:31) and Clare Hinton (8th F35 in 41:52).

Jude Baum continued her winning streak, taking first FV55 and the county prize in 47:32, while Vicki Smith was first FV45 in the Warwickshire 10k Championships in a time of 45:03.

Leamington C&AC’s June Johnson’s 53:03 (348th) saw her win county gold in the W65 category.
