Ryan’s rousing finish secures British Open

The 34th British Open Disc Golf Championship attracted the UK’s leading players to Quarry Park, Leamington, for the two-day tournament, with a couple even flying in from Iceland to take part.

Course pro Derek Robins got off to a fine start in the open competition with two rounds of 56 giving him a four-shot overnight lead from Londoner Dan Ryan, with fellow host club member Neil Webber a further four shots back.

However, on the Sunday morning, Robins’ putting deserted him and his advantage was down to just one shot going into the finals, which saw the top five players complete an extra nine holes.

Ryan, from Croydon Disc Golf Club, now had the momentum and his long drives and superior putting enabled him to secure a three-shot success over Kenilworth-based Robins, with Webber back in sixth.

In the advanced amateur division, Quarry Park players Jon Tweed and Mark Davis battled it out for top spot, with Tweed eventually edging to a one-shot victory thanks in part to a personal-best score of 58 in the third round.

Liam Fisk claimed a massive 13-shot victory in the intermediate amateur division.
