Sevens is the magic number

Rugby St Andrews U14s continued their impressive run of results with a great tournament at the Manchester International 7s.

On the Saturday they were privileged to watch international players competing at the highest level. On the Sunday, after a night camping next to the festival tent with live bands until after midnight, it was their turn.

The first pool match was against Ampthill from Bedfordshire and immediately Saints put on a classy display. Two quick breaks from behind the scrum led to early tries and the pattern was established. The second half began with a perfect sevens try, the boys taking the ball deep in their own half and using the width of the pitch twice before scoring under the posts.

The second match was against Egremont, Cumbrian champions at this age group and looked a tougher proposition. However, Saints simply took this in their stride scoring repeatedly to end up comfortable winners.

The final pool match was against Cheshire side, Northwich. By now the team had found its rhythm and were scoring freely. They finished the pool having played 3 and won 3 scoring over 130 points for just 32 against.

A long break was followed by a quarter and semi-final played nearly back-to-back. The quarters were against Liverpool team, Sefton, and although they provided a little sterner opposition, again St Andrews ended up winning by a comfortable margin.

The semi-final placed the two form teams of the tournament together with the winners favourites for the final. Manchester proved to be an exceptional side, strong, fast and incredibly well drilled. They scored three tries to a solitary reply from Saints in the first half to gain the edge going into the break. The second half was much tighter but Saints were unable to find the break needed and Manchester held on to go through to the final where they comfortably despatched Droitwich.

It was another superb display from St Andrews who learned a lot from seeing sevens played at international level and from being tested in top level competition themselves.

Rugby St Andrews U14s’ next tournament is the finals of the JP Morgan national sevens competition in August. To sponsor the team contact Dean Smith via Under 14s section.
