Such a sunny start at Dog Lane

This week the anglers who turned out for the final round of the Bagem Matchbaits Individual League at Dog Lane, Napton, were greeted by bright sunny weather and higher temperatures than predicted after the day started with a frost.

The winner came from peg 27 at the shallower end of the lake, where Rich Wills (Daventry AC) put together 11lb 11½oz of roach and skimmers. This weight would help him to second overall in the league after dropping his two lowest weights.

Second place went to Colin Youds (Rugby Tackle) who fished peg 5 and fed chopped worm at 6 metres. Working his way through the carp Colin eventually got into some decent skimmers and a nice bonus orfe for a weight of 10lb 13¾oz.

Third-placed Tom Clish was fishing peg 10 and was only ounces behind with 10lb 11½oz of Orfe and skimmers. Tom’s weight helped him to fifth place in the Silver league.

The best Perch pool went to Mick Turner (Daventry AC) with a Perch of 1lb 8¾oz from peg 34.

The inal placings of the Bag’em Matchbaits Silver League 2012 after dropping their two worst weights are as follows: 1st Kevin Follwell (Drennan Got Baits) 37lb+ having fished pegs 20,12,15,34,14,9. 2nd Rich Wills (Daventry AC) 34lb+ having fished pegs 38,10,2,16,5,27. 3rd Gil Corns (Daventry AC) 29lb+ having fished pegs 14,34,4,3,3,36. 4th Lee Taylor (Bag’em Matchbaits) 26lb+ having fished pegs 27,36,32,12. 5th Tommy Clish (Rugby Tackle) 24lb+ having fished pegs 28,38,6,20,13,10. 6th Dave West (Daventry AC) 23lb+ having fished pegs 22,18,8,32,33,8.

Top individual weight of the series went to Kev Follwell with a weight from round 5 of 20lb 3oz.

The Best Perch of the series went to Justin Ashby with a beauty of 3lb 4oz caught on a very cold day, the £75 prize was donated by Tom Clish of Rugby Tackle.

n Eight anglers from Spring Street AC fished Spring Pools bottom lake on Sunday and with temperatures down to minus 4 overnight the frosty conditions made it hard going at first, but soon changed with the sun and a clear blue sky bringing the fish to feed.

In first spot was Brian Hodgetts with 26 lb 14 oz, a good bag of decent sized carp and a few silvers on pellet. Second was Trev Smith with 23 lb 8 oz made up of four good carp and two nice tench plus a mix of silvers on maggot. Third was Mick Chambers with 18 lb 6 oz, a mix of carp and silvers on feeder and pole. With fairly good back-up weights a total of 108 lb being caught.

n The Braunston Thursday Club fished Barby Mill Pool last week and it was John Bates who took the top spot fishing the method to the aerator on peg 5. He caught carp the largest well into double figures weighing in a total 33lb 8oz to push Brian Hodgetts into second place with 27lb 2oz of skimmers on pellet and Mick Wilson into third place with a mixed bag totalling 24lb 4oz from peg 8.

n The White Hart AC fished Spring Pools a week last Sunday and they caught plenty between them, topped by Mick Totts’ 71lb from peg 9. Runner up was D. Gibson with 66lb from peg 1 which pushed Dave Chapman into third place with 55lb from peg 6. Fourth place went to Trev Griffiths with 47lb. Most caught on a mixture of pellet and corn.

n A few reminders now, starting with the first match of the new season for the Rugby Disabled and Pensioners AC which will take place on the ‘E’ Lake at Peatling next Tuesday.

The draw will be held at 8am and the match fished between 9am and 2pm.

n The AEC Angling Club start their new season a week on Saturday and for the first time are opening their matches to guests and non-members.

They all take place on Saturday afternoons between 1pm and 6pm with cost being £13 all in, to be paid at the draw. Matches are fished to Angling Trust model match rules. The first match is on Saturday April 14 on the Carp Lake at Toft Farm Fishery.

n Also taking place on the same day is the first of this year’s Rugby Myton Hospice contests at Peatling Match Lakes on the bottom pool (Lake A). The draw will take place at 8am and the match will be fished between 9am and 3pm.

The top eight anglers from each match will qualify for the final match. There only three main rules - no boilies, no floating baits and two nets must be used at all times (one for small fish, one for large). For more details or to book your place call Nick Carter on (01788) 330454.
