Visitors are streets apart after the break

KENILWORTH 15 BROADSTREET 44

An encouraging opening 40 minutes was quickly forgotten as Kenilworth were blown away by their visitors after the interval.

Leading 15-7 at half-time, Ks were looking good for vital points towards their Midlands Three West survival fight.

However, the visitors scored 37 second-half points without reply to leave Kenilworth anxiously looking over their shoulders.

Initial exchanges proved fairly even, with Kenilworth lock Nic Lake and Broadstreet captain Thatcher being sent to the bin for infringements.

Adam Canning opened the scoring with a penalty which came as a result of the visitors’ offence.

Broadstreet took advantage of a Kenilworth handling error to put the home line under pressure, but a forward pass denied them the opening try.

Ks’ intensity pick up as the half neared a conclusion and a Mike Rust break put Dave Clements over for the first try of the game. The conversion was missed.

Broadstreet responded with a series of phases close to the Kenilworth line putting Zutic over for a try. The successful conversion closed the deficit to one point.

Kenilworth pushed forward from the restart and, after Broadstreet failed to make touch with their clearance, Rust returned the ball with interest, sprinting in at the corner from 30 metres.

The successful conversion gave the home side a 15-7 interval lead and offered no sign of the carnage to come.

Broadstreet came out for the second half with an increased intensity and a break by the lock put them deep in Kenilworth territory. Several phases later, the visitors went over in the corner for the perfect start to the second half.

By now the Broadstreet scrummage was dominant and a penalty for a late charge brought a lineout close to the home line. A series of rolling mauls produced another try for Broadstreet and the signs were ominous for Kenilworth.

Another infringement at the scrummage resulted in a quick tap by Broadstreet and after a series of passes, Nigel Mukarati went over for a further score.

The Coventry side were in the ascendancy and a break by the scrum-half coupled with some poor tackling produced another try, with the hooker going over from short range.

To their credit, Kenilworth continued to push forward and a kick and chase by Canning was gathered close to his own line by the full-back, who ran it back to the home 22. The ball was quickly recycled for the Broadstreet winger to touch down in the corner.

An almost identical sequence of events then saw Broadstreet run the ball back for another score.

In the dying seconds, another attack saw the ball delivered out to their fly-half who slotted over a drop goal to drive home the final nail in the Kenilworth coffin.
