Winch and Cooper take a little gloss off Richards’ day

Bournville Bowling Club’s Kirsty Richards lived up to her reputation at the county finals day at Stoke BC by winning not only the two-wood singles and champion of champions but also the coveted championship four-wood singles in an impressive show of bowling.

County president Carol Norton said: “At only 19 she is certainly a force to be reckoned with.”

However, Richards was denied further silverware in the under-25 pairs alongside Kay Sabin (Norgren), with Jamie-Lea Winch (Rugby Thornfield) and Lillington’s Georgina Cooper fighting back from a six-shot deficit after ten ends to win 21-17.

England international Winch also claimed the under-25 singles with a 21-12 success against Sabin.

Maureen Edwards with Sigrid Thomas, Pat Lowe and Jamie-Lea Winch (Rugby Thornfield) won the fours, beating Pat Moore’s team of J Austin, Brenda Carlton and Norma Willey (Three Spires) 23-9.

After a hard-fought game, Janet Scott with Gill Maund and Dianne Green (Sherwood Park) won the triples 18-12 against Jenny Corn, Jacqui Cook and Margaret Grosvenor (Lillington), while Jean Petty and Lesley Latham (Norgren) beat Trish Jarvis and Diane Medhurst (Wolvey) 22-18 to claim the pairs.

In the benevolent triples, Chris Rathbone with Ann Webb and Mary Adams (Welford) edged out Maureen Tims, Di Thurlbeck and Jayne Crawley (Whitnash and Lillington) 13-12 despite losing five shots on the 12th end.

The unbadged singles proved to be an exciting competition, too, with Cynthia Briggs (Royal Leamington Spa) storming into an 8-2 lead by the fifth end.

Jayne Henfrey (Lillington) still trailed 16-6 after 12 ends, but showed her mettle to close the gap to one point ahead of the 21st.

However, Briggs maintained her composure to claim a 21-18 win.
