The cricket season officially got off to a great positive start at Willoughby Cricket Club on Saturday with members young and old pitching in as part of this year’s Natwest Cricketforce Weekend.

Players and officials with age ranges from 7 to 75 converged on The Green to undertake a busy morning of pre-season cleaning and maintenance as part of Natwest Cricketforce, an ECB-led initiative aimed at rejuvenating cricket facilities throughout England and Wales.

Over 1800 clubs across the UK took part over the weekend in this national event. For their part Willoughby’s hard working contingent completed a series of works in the pavilion, on the playing square and around the ground to ensure the club is clean, fresh and ready for the start of the new season.

Commenting on the event, WCC Press Officer Karl Quinney said:

‘We have been involved with Natwest Cricketforce since it started, and this has probably been our best event to date. The support we have received has been great and we thank everyone for their time and efforts. The morning has once again been well worth it and demonstrated what a great club spirit and community we have.

A series of incentives including free t-shirts and a free breakfast for everyone helped matters along the way. To also assist their efforts, Willoughby also received a very sizeable donation of tea from Yorkshire Tea, plus would like to extend their thanks to the Rugby stores of Asda, Tesco and Wilkinsons for their kind support and donations to the event.

* With the club and ground now looking in great shape for the season, Willoughby’s junior cricketers will begin their weekly outdoor sessions this coming Sunday (14th April).

The ever-thriving and popular Kwik Cricket sessions for boys and girls aged 6 to 10 years will run from 10.00am till 11.00am, with the Under 11 and Under 13 teams training from 11.15 till 12.30.
